Non-toxic Shellac

Shellac itself is not toxic, however the alcohol used to dissolve it can be. Our Bleached Shellac comes in a granular form, making it easy to dissolve using this simple recipe for a NO VOC formula.

Ingredients

Everclear™ is a grain alcohol available in many liquor stores in 190 proof. Pour the two ingredients into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid and let sit overnight to dissolve, shaking the contents occasionally. There will be a gummy excess remaining so the shellac must be strained through a nylon stocking before decanting or use. If 190 proof Everclear™ is not available, use methyl alcohol instead.

To make pigmented shellac or lacquer

Your shellac is now ready to use clear or pigmented in any color you desire. Here is the above recipe in quantity form to create about 1½ cups of lacquer:

Ingredients

After shellac has been dissolved and strained through a nylon stocking, pour the pigment powder in and shake the container vigorously to disperse. Use a quality brush that will not shed hairs. Keep a pair of tweezers handy to remove any brush hairs or debris that would mar the surface.

Apply several thin coats, allowing each to dry in between for 20 to 30 minutes. Good lacquer ware can have as many as 20 coats applied. Be cautious with any alcohol due to its highly flammable nature. Ingredients will separate when stored.
