Mica Powder Instructions

Mica powders are meant as a final sheen effect in transparent or translucent mediums. They are not for mixing into an opaque or white medium as they will become buried.

For Flash Guilding

Mica powder can be flash gilded by dipping a stencil brush into the powder and dusting over a sized surface. Prepare your surface by coating with a water or oil-based adhesive. While still wet to tacky, dust the mica onto the surface. Wait until completely dry before blowing or lightly brushing off the excess. This will create a rich, metallic finish.]

Adding to Waxes

Mica powders can be added to any of our waxes for application to walls, wood, or any surface that will accept wax. Mix the powder at a maximum ratio of 1 part mica powder to 3 parts wax. This can add a beautiful, subtle sheen to walls as a final coat over paint or plaster. Mica tinted waxes can be applied over milkpaint, gessoes, carved woods to enhance the features, etc. Burnish as desired.

Adding to Shellac

Shellac is the perfect medium for micas and will create great depth when applied in many coats. To our basic Shellac Recipe, add three tablespoons of mica to create a metallic lacquer effect. Use the metallic shellac in all coats, or layer the last few with clear shellac depending upon the effect desired.

Enhancing Special Effects

Change the background color and mica powders take on different hues. Lessen the amount of powder in the medium, and the surface becomes translucent with the appearance of great depth.

Other Uses

Add to varnishes for patina effects.

Add to Polymer Clay translucent base to create metallic clay
