Mixing Instructions

Glossary
Vehicle: A thinner in a paint such as water, solvent, alcohol or acetone.
Medium: A binder mixed with its vehicle or thinner.
Paint: A binder mixed with its vehicle and pigments &/or fillers.

About Oxides: Manmade colors made from natural components have the strongest tinting strength because they are pure colorant. A broader, brighter range of colors can be achieved. Most will be considered semi-transparent although many have more opacity than natural colors.

Always mix the vehicle or medium into the pigment powder rather than the reverse. Pigments will saturate to a darker color in mediums that are transparent. Opaque mediums will create a tint of the pigment color revealing its undertones. The color of the undertone can be affected by the color of the base.

Testing with your chosen medium is important. Respect the saturation threshold. Do not compromise the medium by loading more pigment than it can handle. If batch to batch color consistency is required, measure pigment by weight rather than volume.

Be patient and assess color when completely dry.

Water based mediums

Add water to dry pigment powder enough to create a color paste. Work continuously with a tool until all pigment particles have been wetted. Add this paste at the proper ratio according to your recipe, or use the medium itself to create the color paste for addition to the final batch.

Helpful Hint: Alcohol can sometimes aide in coalescing pigment into a water-based vehicle. Create a paste in the same manner using a mix of 50% denatured alcohol with 50% water. A nontoxic alternative would be straight Vodka since it is this same ratio of alcohol to water.

Solvent, Alcohol and Acetone based mediums

Add vehicles such as solvent or alcohol to dry pigment powder enough to create a paste. Work continuously with a tool until all pigment particles have been wetted. Add this paste at the proper ratio according to your recipe, or use the medium itself to create the color paste then add to the final batch.

Storing

Pigments can be stored indefinitely in powder form. Pigments can be mulled in any vehicle for storage in airtight jars for later use with mediums. Remix if vehicle evaporates.
